AirVideo is a nice iPhone app. I downloaded it yesterday and found it fits 100% to my needs.
I previously used Orb along with its iPhone app but the conversion was laggy and the movie would eventually stop playback after a few minutes.
AirVideo works beautifully. Just install a small server on your Mac or PC, define which folders you want to share to your device, install the iPhone app [AppStore link] and you’re ready to stream.
On your local network, AirVideo automatically detects the computers running the program, and lets you browse through content. For remote access, you’ll have to configure your router to pass the incoming connections to your computer running the server.
Locally or remotely, I had no issue. On a 3G connection, it took AirVideo just 15 seconds to start streaming with on-the-fly conversion.
You can also choose to queue files for conversion for later streaming.
I also tried playing a 6GB 720p mkv file with live conversion, but as predicted, that one scared my computer away.
The little plus: AirVideo lets you seek through videos, and will provide the desired frame on screen.
Go get it!

Either play a file, play with live conversion or add it to the conversion queue.

The mkv file which was really too much to ask for.

Seek option, made correctly.

Browse screen.

15 seconds to start a movie in 3G.
